Within a three-week Diwali visit, smaller procedures such as limited liposuction can usually be completed with safe follow-up, while a tummy tuck needs surgery early in the trip and a surgeon's fitness check before flying. Body lifts and combined procedures generally need four to six weeks in India. Pre-trip video assessment and reports make the timeline realistic.
Diwali falls on 8 November this year, and many families flying home from the US, UK and the Gulf ask whether surgery can fit into the same visit. Can I get a tummy tuck in India during a 3 week visit? Often yes, if surgery happens in the first days of the trip and nothing delays healing. Tummy tuck surgery in India for NRI patients is not hard to arrange; the difficult part is the calendar. Our NRI package covers the stay and follow-up. This page covers what it does not: how long the trip needs to be, and when flying home is considered.
Which procedures fit into a two- or three-week visit? Planning NRI plastic surgery in Gujarat
Smaller, shorter operations fit. Longer or combined operations do not, because the time needed after surgery grows with the size of the operation and the clot risk. The guidance from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) on surgery abroad is the basis for the table below. For a general anaesthetic of up to three hours, it advises arriving at least 72 hours before surgery and staying one to two weeks after. For longer operations, several areas at once or higher clot risk, it advises one week before and two to four weeks after.
| Procedure | Minimum days in India | Earliest flight review | Clot precautions | Remote follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Limited liposuction (one or two areas) | About 3 days before surgery and 1 to 2 weeks after | [surgeon protocol] | Risk score, walking the same day, compression garment | Teleconsultation at set intervals |
| Standard tummy tuck | About 3 days before surgery and at least 2 weeks after | [surgeon protocol] | Risk score, early walking, stockings, blood thinner if the score calls for it | Teleconsultation at set intervals |
| Tummy tuck with liposuction | About 1 week before surgery and 2 to 4 weeks after | [surgeon protocol] | As above, with a lower threshold for a blood thinner | Teleconsultation at set intervals |
| Body lift or several procedures together | About 1 week before surgery and 2 to 4 weeks after, so 4 to 6 weeks in all | [surgeon protocol] | Risk score, stockings, blood thinner usually considered | Teleconsultation at set intervals |
A standard tummy tuck fits a three-week visit only when surgery is booked in the first week. If you arrive with ten days to spare, liposuction in India for NRI visitors is the more realistic choice, and the tummy tuck can wait for a longer trip.
How soon can I fly after liposuction in India?
The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) advises waiting five to seven days after liposuction, and seven to ten days after a tummy tuck. Those are minimums. The decision is made at the flight review, not by the date on your ticket.
What can be done by video before you fly?
Almost all of the planning. A teleconsultation with Dr. Ashutosh Shah decides whether the procedure you want fits the trip you have, before you book anything. Our NRI corner sets out the travel and stay side.
- Photos of the area from the front, side and back, in good light.
- Weight history, including any recent weight loss and weight loss medicines.
- Medicines and past surgeries, especially blood thinners, hormones and the contraceptive pill.
- Recent blood reports and an ECG where needed.
- Your flight dates, so the surgery date is set from your return flight backwards.
A written plan and an estimate of tummy surgery cost follow the call. A short in-person examination after you arrive confirms the plan before surgery.
How soon after surgery is a long-haul flight considered?
Only after a flight review in person by the operating surgeon, which BAAPS treats as a requirement before any patient travels home. The earliest day for that review is set by Dr. Ashutosh Shah for each procedure and is shown in the table as [surgeon protocol]. Flying after tummy tuck surgery is considered when these checks are clear:
- Wound: closed, dry, with no spreading redness.
- Drains: removed, or a written plan for removal.
- Fluid: no seroma, a pocket of fluid under the skin, that needs draining.
- Walking: comfortable for several minutes at a time.
- Legs and breathing: no calf swelling or pain, and no breathlessness.
If any check is not clear, the flight is moved. That is why the trip needs spare days after the earliest review date.
What about clot risk on long flights?
It is the main reason the timeline matters. Major surgery and long flights each raise the risk of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a clot in a leg vein, and of a pulmonary embolism, a clot that travels to the lungs. BAPRAS notes that the two risks add up. BAAPS adds that travel of around four hours already changes the risk, and flights from the US, UK and Gulf are longer than that.
Under Dr. Ashutosh Shah, clot prevention follows these steps:
- Risk scoring before surgery. Age over 40, a BMI over 30, smoking, oral hormones, a past clot or a family history all raise the score.
- Walking from the day of surgery.
- Compression stockings for at least two weeks, as BAAPS advises.
- A blood-thinning injection when the risk score calls for it.
- On the flight: an aisle seat, water through the journey, walking every hour or so, stockings on, and no alcohol or sleeping tablets.
How is follow-up handled after you return abroad?
By teleconsultation at set intervals, agreed before you leave. BAAPS advises an early review one to two weeks after surgery, then further reviews between six weeks and six months, by phone or video once the patient is home. You send photos before each call, and Dr. Ashutosh Shah reviews the wound, swelling and shape.
How does follow-up work for NRIs after body contouring?
The same way as for local patients, but on screen. Recovery after abdomen liposuction is gradual: swelling settles over weeks, and the final shape takes several months. Follow-up therefore continues long after you fly home. Before you leave you get your operation notes, garment instructions, and what to do if something changes.
Next step
Send your photos, reports and flight dates before you book surgery. Planning tummy tuck surgery in India for NRI visitors works backwards from the return flight, and the procedure is matched to the time you have.
This page is for education and is not a substitute for examination. The day ranges in the table follow BAAPS guidance on surgery abroad and are not this clinic's protocol; the earliest flight review day for each procedure is set by the operating surgeon. Clot prevention and follow-up are planned for each patient. Please consult Dr. Ashutosh A Shah about your own treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fly back to the US 10 days after a tummy tuck?
Sometimes, but it is not automatic. UK plastic surgeons advise waiting seven to ten days after a tummy tuck before flying, and a long-haul journey adds clot risk. Dr. Ashutosh Shah decides at an in-person flight review, based on your wound, drains, walking and clot risk score.
Do I need blood tests before coming to India?
Usually yes. Recent reports such as a blood count, blood sugar, kidney function and clotting tests, plus an ECG where age or history calls for it, are reviewed before you book flights. For NRI plastic surgery in Gujarat at this clinic, the exact list is confirmed at the video consultation.
Can I attend Diwali functions after liposuction?
Short, seated visits are usually fine once the first few days have passed and you are walking comfortably. Wear the compression garment under loose clothes, drink water, skip alcohol, and avoid long hours standing or crowds near fireworks. If swelling or pain increases, rest and call the clinic.
Who removes stitches abroad?
Often nobody needs to, because many tummy tuck closures use dissolving stitches under the skin. Where stitches or drains must come out, this is planned before discharge, ideally before you fly. If anything is left, you get written instructions for a nurse or doctor at home.
Is the NRI package cost fixed?
The estimate after the video consultation is provisional, because the plan can change once you are examined in person. The written quote should list what is included, such as surgery, stay, garments, medicines and follow-up calls. Ask what would change it, such as an added procedure or a longer stay.
What if a complication happens after I leave?
Contact the clinic first for problems that are not urgent, such as wound redness, oozing or increasing swelling, and share photos. For calf pain, chest pain or sudden breathlessness, go to your local emergency department at once. Carry your operation notes, because emergency care abroad may be charged.
